ReefHD Algae Buster

ReefHD Algae Buster

Algae Buster is the reef safe silver bullet treatment for Bryopsis, Caulerpa, green hair algae, and many other types of nuisance algae that have plagued the reef hobby from the beginning. It attacks nuisance algae at the cellular level, resulting in a clean tank after only 14 days!

Directions:

Algae Buster is the only FDA registered reef algae treatment. Please use as directed:

Turn down the skimmer level to below collection cup for the first 3 days to prevent medication removal. After 3 days the skimmer level can be returned to normal to remove the algae and nutrients as it breaks down. GFO or other phosphate removal media can be used, but remove other chemical filtration such as Purigen and activated carbon. Empty 1 capsule for every 20 gallons of tank water into filter sock or high flow area in sump. The powder will take time to dissolve.

Nuisance algae will begin dying after 3-6 days, please do not re-dose for faster results! Most if not all algae will die during the 14-day treatment cycle. After 14 days perform a minimum 20% water change, and if hair algae is still present another dose can be added. Do not overdose. Filter socks are recommended to remove loose algae before it breaks down in order to prevent nutrient spikes.

Only for use on ornamental aquariums and fish. Not for human use and not for treating fish intended for human consumption. Keep away from children and animals. In case of accidental overdose, contact a health professional immediately. In case of accidental tank overdose, the medication can be removed using Purigen.

Frequently asked questions:

What is Algae Buster and how does it work?

Algae Buster is a fluconazole-based additive that attacks nuisance algae at the cellular level. The algae species affected by Algae Buster contain ergosterol, a sterol similar to cholesterol in humans that maintains cell wall integrity. Algae Buster prevents the conversion of lanosterol into ergosterol, which essentially "melts" the algae by compromising the integrity of its cell walls.

What kinds of algae does Algae Buster treat?

Algae Buster treats many kinds of saltwater nuisance algae, most notably the invasive Bryopsis, Caulerpa, and green hair algae species that consume tanks and smother corals. Algae Buster does not affect Valonia species, also known as bubble algae. In general, any hair algae that is starting to become a nuisance can be treated by Algae Buster.

We are currently experimenting with different algae species to create a comprehensive list, and welcome any photos you may have of Algae Buster affecting different species of nuisance algae.

Can Algae Buster harm my corals, including sensitive SPS?

No, Algae Buster is 100% reef safe including sensitive Acropora corals. In fact, it is the most effective way of removing nuisance algae that is overtaking and killing SPS corals, something typically seen with Seriatopora and Pocillopora species in tanks with lower flow or high levels of phosphates.

As those with reef systems know, nothing grows algae faster and more tenaciously than sections of dead coral on a colony that is still alive. In the past, the recommended treatments have been manual removal, fragging, and aggressive phosphate and nutrient removal in an attempt to slowly kill the algae. This can negatively impact corals, including SPS, by minimizing the available nutrients in the system. With Algae Buster you only need to dose once and then watch as your SPS and other corals start to flourish again.

We do recommend using a filter sock and cleaning it regularly to prevent fluctuations in phosphate and nitrate levels as the algae breaks down.

Does Algae Buster affect Chaetomorpha or Caulerpa refugium algae?

Algae Buster does not affect Chaetomorpha as well as most if not all decorative algae species. Chaetomorpha can be left in the refugium as normal during treatment.

Algae Buster does kill Caulerpa species, so Algae Buster should not be used in a system with a Caulerpa refugium. We have not tested Algae Buster on all decorative algae, but so far it has been noted to only kill nuisance algae.

Will Algae Buster harm my saltwater fish or invertebrates?

Algae Buster is reef safe for fish and invertebrates as long as it is dosed correctly. Dosage for fish treatments is much higher than the Algae Buster dosages for treating nuisance algae, so you can rest assured your livestock will be unaffected.

Can Algae Buster affect my nitrates and phosphates?

As nuisance algae dies, it adds nutrients into the water column if it is not removed first. Although this is not generally an issue for tanks with normal algae outbreaks, it is why we recommend using a filter sock and cleaning it regularly when treating with Algae Buster. In systems with large algae outbreaks it is a good idea to manually remove as much algae as possible before treatment to avoid nutrient spikes as the algae dies off.

I dosed Algae Buster and nothing is happening, should I add more?

Do not re-dose Algae Buster sooner than 14 days after the initial dose. While results of Algae Buster are usually seen within 3-6 days, in some tanks it can take up to a week until algae begins dying off. Caulerpa species in particular can take more time.

Is Algae Buster FDA approved?

Algae Buster is FDA registered, but it has not been approved by the FDA. The terms FDA registered and FDA approved are frequently confused; FDA approval means that a product has gone through a lengthy and expensive process to be approved by the FDA. This costs millions of dollars and for that reason is generally done by pharmaceutical companies.

FDA registration means that Algae Buster and our establishment are registered as a product that uses a drug that has been approved for other uses by the FDA but not approved for its current use as an aquarium algaecide. FDA registration does not in any way denote approval of the establishment or its products by FDA.

This does not affect the functionality of Algae Buster, but we hope it clears up some confusion regarding the terminology.
